LOCAL ARCHAEOLOGY

with

Trevor and Vera Gibbons, and Victoria Hosegood

A remarkable local archaeology story spanning more than 60 years will be brought to life in Birchington this July as part of the 2026 Festival of British Archaeology. Birchington Heritage Trust will host an evening presentation by Trevor and Vera Gibbons, who will share first-hand memories of their excavations at Gore End Creek and Minnis Bay and their work with Antoinette 'Tony' Powell-Cotton between 1965 and 1975. Their story connects pioneering local discoveries with their recent research that has helped re-evaluate archaeology collections at the Powell-Cotton Museum. The finds at Minnis Bay reveal evidence of life from the Bronze Age to the 20th century and made a significant contribution to the development of inter-tidal archaeology.
The evening will also look to the future, with Victoria Hosegood from Kent County Council giving an update on Thanet's Archaeological Mapping Project.
The event offers residents, heritage enthusiasts and visitors a chance to hear how discoveries on the local shoreline continue to shape understanding of Birchington's past.
